ROBERT "BOBBY" JAY FOOTLICK
If one attended the services on June 17, 2015 to celebrate the life of Bob Footlick, they were lucky enough to experience the outpouring of love that spilled over into every inch of the Sol Levinson Funeral Home. People from every part of his life, walked in, drove in, carpooled, and flew to be there for his wife, Ronnie, their children Leslie and Frank (Schaller) and Randi and Joe Settleman), 5 grandchildren and Bob's brother Jerrold.Bob always teased Ronnie that when he eventually passed away, he wanted a sell- out crowd- and he surely got his wish in spades. The lines to pass condolences started hours prior to the service, right out into the parking lot. Rooms were opened, chairs were added, people stood, and most importantly people talked about the impression that this man made on their lives. He affected everyone in that room and surely many, many more unable to attend that day.
Everyone that came into contact with this fair, passionate, gentle man, Bob Footlick knew his life was centered all about his family. Ronnie said that his work was a hobby. Whether you were the president of a Fortune 500 company or the one that took the trash from the curb, Bob treated the people with the same respect and humility. He was attentive to the stories people told and when you interacted with him, you believed you were the only one around. He just was special and had that knack. Bob loved a good joke, you could often hear his infectious laugh and his dedication at work, even after decades he knew and remembered the driving routes for the delivery drivers and what time they were scheduled to pass a specific street !
Whether you were his friend or family- one thing is for sure. You're gonna miss this guy A LOT ! Continue the legacy of this wonderful man for years to come and share your "Bob story".
Robert J. Footlick, who was president of Bond Distributing Co. and a nationally recognized leader in the beer industry, died of cancer June 15 at his Pikesville home. He was 75.
The son of Bernard Footlick, a pharmacist, and Rae Footlick, a homemaker, Robert Jay Footlick was born in Mansfield, Ohio, and raised in Wooster, Ohio, where he graduated from Wooster High School.
After earning a bachelor's degree in 1961 from Tulane University, he worked for an uncle for a year before enrolling at the University of Maryland School of Law. He left after a year and transferred to George Washington University Law School, where he majored in labor relations and earned his law degree in 1965.
Unhappy with pursuing a career in law, Mr. Footlick went to work as a beer salesman for his future father-in-law, Edward Borow.
In 1950, Mr. Borow had established Bond Distributing Co. at Bond and Thames streets in Fells Point with 10 employees and sold Miller High Life, the "Champagne of Beers," throughout Baltimore.
In 1964, Mr. Footlick married Ronnie Borow, and after the death of his father-in-law in 1979, he became president of the company.
"Bob was the consummate entrepreneur whose vision led Bond to become the first shared house in the industry by bringing Coors Beer East in 1983, thus starting a wave of shared houses across the country that ultimately led to a MillerCoors merger," said Mrs. Footlick, who is director of human relations for Bond Distributing.
Mrs. Footlick said that in earlier years, distributors such as Bond only represented Miller and several minor brands like Carling and Schmidt's.
Today, in addition to MillerCoors products, the company's portfolio includes Sam Adams, Yuengling, Pabst, Blue Moon, Boulevard, Bell's, Terrapin, Ballantine, Fat Tire, National Bohemian, Harpoon, Yards, Flying Dog, and Jailbreak.
"We also represent about 20 craft breweries and all the new Belgium brands," said Mrs. Footlick.
Because of his leadership in the industry in Maryland and across the country, Mr. Footlick was named a Miller Legend in 2008.
Mr. Footlick was a tireless advocate for the products he represented and promoted. In 1984, the Orioles accepted his idea for the annual Floppy Hat Night, first at the old Memorial Stadium and now at Camden Yards, which promoted Miller Lite.
"For the first 25 years, the hat was orange, but now it has been black, camouflage and other colors. It was one of his proudest moments," said Mrs. Footlick, who added that the hat is in the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, N.Y.
During the 1990s, Mr. Footlick held a patent for the Rolling Six Pack Truck that toured the nation promoting Miller products.
Mr. Footlick had been a member of the board of the Maryland Beer Distributors for many years.
"I've known Bob for more than a decade, and he was one of a kind," said Pete Marino, vice president of communications for MillerCoors in Chicago.
"He had a tremendous way about him and a great sense of humor. He really cared about the beer business and in doing so became a MillerCoors legend," said Mr. Marino. "He was one of our best distributors. He was a terrific guy with a wonderful personality who just radiated charisma."
Mr. Footlick was an avid Orioles and Ravens fan. He enjoyed playing golf for 40 years at the Woodholme Country Club, where he had been a member of its board.
His philanthropic interests included serving on the boards of the Babe Ruth Sports Museum and the Maryland Sports Boosters.
Mr. Footlick's two daughters represent the third generation to work for Bond. His daughter, Leslie Schaller of Owings Mills, is the company's marketing manager, while her sister, Randi J. Settleman, also of Owings Mills, is sales manager.
He continued working until three weeks before his death.
"He went out with his boots on," said his wife. "His business was his hobby, and wherever he went, he made a tremendous impact."
Mr. Footlick was a member of Baltimore Hebrew Congregation.
Funeral services were held June 17 at Sol Levinson & Bros. in Pikesville.
In addition to his wife and two daughters, he is survived by a brother, Jerrold Footlick of Durham, N.C.; and five grandchildren.

The Beer Industry got weaker yesterday with the loss of Bob Footlick. A leader, innovator, and a risk-taker. No matter who you were, Bob treated you as he knew you forever, and always wanted to hear how the business was going in your eyes.
Whether it was being the 1st Coors distributor east of the Mississippi, or the man who created the most successful Orioles giveaway item, "The Floppy Hat", Bob shaped the Beer business in Maryland.
He once told me, other than my family, all I think about from the time I wake up til the time I go to sleep, is how to sell more beer.
That's a passion we all should share.

Ronnie, Leslie, and Randi: Please accept my deepest condolences on Bob's passing. He truly was one special guy who everyone always enjoyed being around. The Fighting Scot has lost his final battle but he's smoking a big fat cuban waiting for the rest of us to arrive.

Ronnie, Leslie, Randi and the entire Family,
I want to express condolences to you all. I will miss Bob very much... Picking on him about his very UN-Irish green tie on St Patrick's day and all the stories... Sitting on the panel and him telling his stripper story. I truly loved him and Thank him for always making me feel like family, from the very first day I started at Bond Distributing til the last time I spoke with him in his office. Ronnie, Nancy and I remind each other often, how fortunate we were to have met you and Bob years agon on that Molson trip to Mexico. It took about three minutes for us to know we had made wonderful new friends. We will miss Bob dearly and we wish you peace & healing. Randi & Leslie, I adore your father. Every minute with him was a gift that I will always cherish. His humor and his insights helped me many times over the years. You wers so blessed to have him for your father and he was so proud of you. I wish you peace and comfort.

Ronnie, Randi and Leslie,
My deepest sympathy for your loss. It was an honor and privilege to know Bob. I remember how nervous I was on my first visit to Bond in 1999, within a matter of minutes he made me feel welcome. I'll always remembers his kind, generous spirit - and that famous cigar too! He is and always will be one of the all time greats. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

Dear Mrs. Footlick, Randi, Leslie and family, I am deeply saddened by the passing of Mr. Footlick. Our Bond family will not be the same without him. He was cut from a different cloth. Aside from being a legend in the beer business, he was extremely humble, kind, genuine and giving. He made every person who came through the doors of Bond Distributing feel welcome and appreciated. He will be greatly missed by everyone who had the honor of knowing him. Mr. Footlick was an amazing man! His legacy will live on forever in our hearts!

My deepest sympathy on your loss. I can't begin to express how sad and empty I feel about the loss of Mr. Footlick. His understanding with any problems you came to him with was always comforting. It won't be the same not greeting him, shaking his hand, and asking him how things were going, and him calling me Ricky when seeing him at the office. I respected him tremendously !

Bob was a friend from law school many years ago. He was a wonderful guy always full of interesting stories about his life which he was eager to share. My staff and I are going to miss him SO MUCH. He was such a perfect mixture of charmer, storyteller, and comedian. I'm so honored to have known him. Something that I'll always remember is that Bob never addressed me formally as Dr. (which I really appreciated).......he always addressed me as "friend." We loved him.

My first job out of college was working for Bond, I was nervous about the interview with Mr. Foot lick and wore my new blue suit. He offered me the job and asked where I was going all dressed up after the interview. I loved working for him, he always had an open door to his office, and reminded me of a loving father especially after my first fender bender in the Bond car. Whenever I smell a good cigar it brings back fond memories of him.

Bond IS Family.
And Mr. Footlick IS our patriarch.
These facts remain true today just as they did prior to Monday. That will not change. The entire family should feel proud knowing that you've bred a culture of love, loyalty, and success. This is no accident. It started at home and has extended into the workplace. Quite a remarkable thing. Our prayers go out to the entire family. Mr. Footlick will certainly be missed, but his legacy lives on in each of you. Thank you for allowing the entire Bond Distributing community to feel like we are part of your family. And here's to another 65 years!
